1After getting my Etranzact Genesis Card, how do I activate the Card for use?

• To activate your card, follow the instructions on activation as detailed on the Genesis card collected from your Faculty. However, you will be required to go to the e-transact website through the option “activate your genesis card” displayed on your Portal page”.

• You will thereafter personalize your card by filling the form displayed after activation and click on submit.

• After submission, you will instantly receive a code on your e-mail address and or your cell number, as earlier submitted by you, during the Biodata stage. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CODE SHOULD BE USED WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF RECEIPT, OTHERWISE THE WHOLE PROCEDURE WILL HAVE TO BE REPEATED.

• To enable you pay on line, use the card number.
2How do I get My current Etranzact Genesis Card?

• Log in to your profile (Portal page ) on the Student Portal
• Click “Current E-transact card Retriever” option available on your Portal page and a page that will allow you retrieve your current card number (i.e. as a replacement for the number on the e-transact card collected from your faculty) will be displayed.

Please note that the card number on the e-transact card collected from your faculty is just a dummy and should be replaced with the new one displayed.
• To display the new card number, enter your Matric number/Jamb Registration number
(for freshers only) and click on “Get details”
• Write/print the displayed card number securely as a replacement for the one collected from your Faculty e.g. Card number on e-transact collected from the Faculty; 502192******264899 will be replaced by 0123456789101136 (either 16 or more digits)
3Who is a Guidance Counsellor?

Any new student in a University may face some challenges that he/she may not be able to handle alone. If prompt assistance is not provided, it could lead to poor academic performance and involvement in deviant behaviours. In order to avoid such, there is usually a Guidance Counsellor or a Level Adviser in the University to whom students can look up to in times of difficulties.
A Guidance Counsellor is a professional who assists clients (students) in handling their challenges. He/ She is trained to guide the students to make appropriate decisions in as academic, vocational and personal-social areas. He also assists students to grow in knowledge and other aspects of human development. The Counsellor helps students and parents in making decisions that will enable the students have a smooth stay in the University. Parents can also be assisted to work hand-in-hand with the University in order to have a proper up-bringing of their children.

Negative peer influence can be managed using the following strategies:
a. Assertiveness (demand for your rights confidently).
b. Do not keep silent, report threats to the Security Unit or Unilorin Guidance and Counselling Centre.
c. Keeping only friends who are hardworking, disciplined and obedient to the constituted authorities.
d. Always remembering the warnings given to you by your parents or guardians.
e. Seeking guidance from the elders or counsellors.

Failure in academic activities can be prevented if the following are considered:
a. Set goals on what you desire to achieve and map out appropriate strategies.
b. Read textbooks, journals and other educative materials.
c. Visit the library to supplement your personal textbooks.
d. Do not depend on your notes alone, read other relevant texts.
e. Create time to study at home.
f. Learn to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
g. Attend school regularly.
h. Ask questions during lectures.
i. Establish cordial relationship with your lecturers.
j. Be optimistic.
k. Be determined.
l. Do not waste time watching television, movies and attending disco parties.
m. Register with the University health centre and visit the centre occasionally.
n. Do not be too playful.
o. Avoid bad group.
11How do I cope with difficult courses?

Many students find some courses difficult to understand no matter how well lecturers try to explain. This may be due to poor study skills, negative attitude towards courses, lack of interest, negative influence of friends, absenteeism, etc. These challenges could be handled through the adoption of the following strategies:
a. Engaging in a study group where your problems can be solved twice or thrice weekly.
b. Giving more attention to courses on which you are weak than others, e.g. engage in private reading and attend tutorial classes.
c. Studying with past question papers to enable you have adequate practice.
d. Being friendly with your course lecturers so that you will be free to seek assistance from them.
e. Visiting the school library to read more on your area of specialization.
f. Asking questions on issues that are not clear and not pretending to know what you do not know.
g. Being active in class and showing zeal and interest.
h. Not studying only a course for too long a time to avoid loss of interest.
i. Being computer literate in order to improve your research skills.

13What should be my attitude to University activities/programmes?

An adage says “An individual’s attitude determines his/her altitude”. As a university student, you should:
a. Attend University programmes promptly and regularly ( Eg. lectures, games and seminars).
b. Ensure that you benefit maximally from programmes organised by the
University.
c. Seek information on the benefits of programmes organised by the
University.
d. Participate fully in academic and other related activities.
e. Do your assignments regularly and learn from the corrections.
f. Do not waste your precious time on activities that are not educative.
g. Ensure that you work hard from the beginning to the end of the semester.
h. Always read your textbooks and do not depend solely on lecture notes.
i. Get enrolled in a study or brain-storming group in order to learn from others.
k. Obtain past questions from your colleagues (seniors) and use them in preparing for tests and examinations.
l. Prepare a personal study timetable for effective time-management.
m. Ask questions on areas that you do not understand from your lecturers or course mates.
n. Do not procrastinate. Do your academic work without delay.
o. Practise over learning while studying. For instance, read the same text many times to ensure proper mastery.
p. Avoid rote-learning or memorization, but read to understand. Rote-learning could lead to “black out”, a form of forgetfulness.
q. Make proper use of the library to widen your scope of knowledge.
r. Create interest in academic activities.
s. Relax when you are bored and do not overwork or force yourself to read.
t. Avoid being playful as playfulness leads to failure.
u. Put your points on a jotter and review the points before you go to sleep and first thing in the morning.
v. Make positive statements to yourself e.g.
a. “I can make it if I work hard”
b. “Failure is not my portion”
c. “Come what may, I must succeed”
d. “I must overcome laziness”
w. Practice diagrams and illustrations. This will aid your understanding of what you have learnt.
